Consultation and Surgical Planning

Surgery is not something undertaken lightly. A person may have no option about having surgery as it is a requirement for an illness or condition. Alternatively a person may choose to undergo a surgical procedure to enhance their quality of life.

It is important that all phases of the process are managed well.

Surgical Consultations:

There are very important. It is obviously the time when a person's problem or concerns are openly discussed. An examination takes place and then further discussion regarding possible solutions and surgical options. The operation is discussed in detail along with possible risks and complications.

Risks of surgery can be divided into general risks such as anaesthesia, bleeding and infection and specific risks of that particular procedure.

It is important to establish an accurate medical history, medication list, any known allergies and any history of smoking. These can have great relevance to the outcome of the surgery.

It is common for photographs to be taken. This is important for the surgeon to plan the surgery and also for later it is extremely useful for comparing pre and post operative results.

There is a lot of information to take in at a consultation. If you have the opportunity write down questions prior to seeing Dr Mills. For complex issues it is sometimes important to have a second consultation.

Surgery:

If medically appropriate then all aspirin or aspirin containing products should be stopped a week prior to surgery. Non steroidal anti inflammatories should be stopped 48hours prior to surgery. Both these medications increase the risk of bleeding both during and after surgery.

Patients who smoke should stop for 2 weeks to a month prior to surgery - depending on the procedure. Smoking should be stopped for 2 weeks after surgery.

Plan to get to the hospital or daysurgery facility well ahead of time and make sure that appropriate transportation is organised for afterwards.

After Surgery:

You will be guided by Dr Mills about how much recovery time and time from work is required. Make sure that the appropriate support systems are in place for when you return home.
